Leap of Faith Pink Saturday

Today I’m sharing a couple of my lawn pinks…

baby birds 011

First a grove of Pink Crepe Myrtle that are just starting to bloom…Mother’s house sold this spring and I took a couple of dollars from the sale and the closing of her estate to add nine small trees to our side lawn. She loved Myrtles and I love thinking of her as I tend them. Spring rains got the coneflower off to a strong start. So far the deer have left them alone and they are filling this bed with happy Pink. It’s my Pink side of the yard.

Baby Birds 009

I think this is the mother bird at the nest. It’s about the size of a small cereal bowl. It’s made of mud and fibers and hubby says it’s lined with fluffy fur or dryer lint.

Baby Birds 005 It’s not a pretty nest…sort of ugly like the proverbial “mud fence” and it’s tiny for the four little birdies. We were just sure they would fledge today based on the wing stretching and flapping that has been going on for the last two or three days, but this evening they have settled in for another night. We have marveled at what good providers the parent birds are. They keep watch from the flower bed or a nearby small tree.

Baby Birds 012

They hunt insects and feed and groom the lucky little ones all day long.

Baby Birds 002

We will spend Father’s Day weekend watching the Leap of Faith as they leave the safety of the nest. Look at how high the nest is! We threw a couple of sheepskin rugs below the nest should one fall over before their feathers are able to support them.

Baby Birds 013

There’s not much to hang on to as they learn to fly.

Baby Birds 010

There is a small railing around the edge and a  few lamps and shutters. But they will do what little birds do every spring. They will hop over the side and take wing. This has been such a safe spot for the nestlings, but we are holding out faith that it will be a good spot for fledglings. One of my favorite hymns is “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” and I’ll probably be humming it all weekend. Speaking of the weekend, let’s go see who Beverly has gathered for us to visit this holiday Saturday at how Sweet the Sound. Have a Pink Week.

LaVerne, I loved this post.

First, it was so wonderful that you planted the crepe myrtles in your side yard, using $ from your mom's estate! I am sure you pleased her with that gesture!! $ from my mom went to help pay for our house we were building and I'm sure she was happy about that, too. However, there was a little bit of cash she had tucked away in her "underwear drawer" that my bro. and I split. . . and do you know, I can't spend it..and that's been nearly 8 years ago. I guess I feel I'm holding on to her a bit longer, or something weird. One day I will find the perfect item to buy in her honor.

Love your sweet birds. I hope they make their solo journey safely. We had some wack-a-doodle robins build a nest on one of our down spouts this year...on the west side of the house! I guess the babies have flown the coop, as I don't see their little beaks peeking out of the nest any more. I'm sure a couple met untimely deaths as I found 2 little birdie bodies on our drive way after a huge windy rain storm...didn't know about the nest until I found them :( Usually they build a nest in one of our little trees in the front yard!

HPS and HFD, too, to the men in your life!

They are still spotted at this time.

Show and Tell Sunday June 15

Flea Market Finds...sounds like my whole house and yard...

Milk Glass Collection

Milk Glass Collection
Who knew that a 25 cent flea market find would unleash such a collecting frenzy? I never pay more than a dollar unless it's a really nice piece. They are great grouped with a single daisy in each.

These used to be inexpensive florist vases in the 50's and 60's. Everyone's Grandmother had bunches.

Mexicana Dishes

Mexicana Dishes
My sister found these for me at Bussy's Flea Market in San Antonio, Texas. I had seen pictures in her Fiesta reference book. Mexicana was also made by Homer Laughlin in the 30's. I had been looking for several years without ever finding even a single piece when she found the set...with a promise to hold it for us, she came running to find me and I bought the entire set...60+ pieces for $50.

I've added to the set over the years, but the price and experience will never match that first amazing find.

Vintage Kitchen Hutch

Vintage Kitchen Hutch
When my hubby found this hutch it was Pepto pink and I was not 100% sure about it. But with a new red back and fresh white paint and refurbished hardware, it became one of my favorite pieces.

Nancy made me save the vine

Nancy made me save the vine
The vine and flowers painted on the inside were in such bad shape that I was ready to remove it all. Nancy -My Crafty Little Page convinced me to keep it and after some touch-up work, I'm glad I listened to her. My husband restores vintage Cushman motorscooters and he tries to make everything "mint" condition again. The Shabby Chic movement came along just in time to keep me from making some terrible mistakes.
